The Institute made a humble beginning from a portion of the Polytechnic building at Kashmere Gate, Delhiand has made a long journey till the shifting of the premise at Lajpat Nagar churning out trained manpower all through.

The growing need of manpower in hotel industry and growth of the hospitality and allied services necessitated up gradation of Food Crafts Institute to a full- fledged Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in1999.

Since then the Institute has been training future hospitality professionals and catering to the rising demands in various fields like – hotels, aviation, hospitals, travel and tourism, restaurant and bars, fast food joints etc. At DIHM courses encompass of both practical and theoretical knowledge of every phase of Hotel, Catering and Institutional Management starting from B Sc to short Diplomas and various skill enhancement programs. It also offers various tailor made programes created as per the requirement of variousagencies.

The institute is jointly sponsored by, Ministry of tourism Government of India and Government of Delhi It is headed by a Board of Governors consisting of eminent persons from government and industry. This institute is affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management, New Delhi, which is apex body to control and conduct examination.

Hospitality is a key segment of the total travel and tourism industry. Several factors such as the development of travel and transportation system, increasing industrialization, the tempo at which business is transacted, the need to maintain a personal touch, rising levels of discretionary income has led to the growth of the hospitality industry. Today tourism is recognized as the largest economic activity in the world and is expected to grow further giving rise to high demand of trained professionals.
